Bricklaying

Stretcher Bond

The long, narrow face of a brick is known as the stretcher. The stretcher (or running) bond sees our brickwork contractors laying bricks with just the stretchers on view, with overlaps above and below the course. This is a basic repeating pattern for walls of a half-brick thickness.

Header Bond

This type of bricklaying uses the short face of the brick. Each course uses the headers as wall faces to provide jobs in Southampton, Portsmouth, Winchester, Bournemouth and Hampshire with a structure of full thickness. The overlap stays equal to the brick’s half-width with bats used in the quoin course.

English Bond

With the English bond style, our time-served brickwork contractors use alternating stretcher and header courses. The heading course lays centrally on the stretcher course so that each row aligns vertically, with a quoin closer used to stagger the continuity between the vertical joints.

Flemish Bond

This bricklaying style uses alternate stretcher and header bonds in just one course, with the next laid in a way that keeps the header sitting centrally on the stretcher course underneath. This style has a minimum thickness of one brick and requires more skill than most other layouts.

Retaining Walls

A retaining wall is a structure that is vertical (or, at the very least, near vertical). It is typically used by brickwork contractors when one side of the wall needs to retain soil or a similar material to prevent collapses or erosion. You can find retaining walls used in building and construction work, as well as in hard landscaping. The wall absorbs the pressure that is created by the retained material.

Our experience in bricklaying allows us to build retaining walls in any style for projects in Portsmouth, Bournemouth, Winchester and all parts of the surrounding Hampshire area:

Reinforced Retaining Walls

A wall that is built by steadily increasing the amount of force applied to the backside of the wall by soil. This method uses reinforcing materials, usually geotextiles, which have extremely high tensile strengths.

Cantilever Retaining Walls

This bricklaying method uses a construction style with stems and base slabs made from reinforced concrete. The style needs meticulous design work but uses far less concrete than a monolithic gravity wall.

Buttressed Retaining Walls

Unlike retaining walls in the cantilever design, buttressed walls offer support from the opposite side of the retained material. The buttress acts as a compression member for increased strength and functionality.

Our brickwork contractors can build decorative or retaining walls in a full range of practical designs.
